Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
In order for a manufacturer or vendor to be accepted by major retailers as an official “Trading Partner,” it’s imperative that the manufacturer or vendor has the ability to send information electronically in an approved format to the retailer. This may sound like a simple process, but, in actuality, there is no standardized acceptable format, and different retailers require manufacturer or vendor data to be submitted in different formats. The reality is that if a manufacturer or vendor can’t provide their data to the retailer in his required format, the retailer will not entertain a business relationship with the manufacturer or vendor or even designate them as an official Trading Partner. Consequently, this means the retailer will not purchase product from them or otherwise do business with them.
